This is a crochet pattern for a super chunky, ribbed textured, scarf with braided cable design pockets and optional fringe.

My finished scarf measures approximately 8 feet long by 1 foot wide. You can adjust the length to suit the wearer. See below for children’s size adjustments.

The scarf is made using Super Chunky (US Super Bulky) #6 weight yarn. I have used 100% acrylic yarn, but you can use any type of yarn you prefer. The thickness of #6 yarns can vary, as a guide, the yarn I have used (Marriner Yarns Super Chunky) recommends using a 10mm needle/hook.

You can use 3 strands of Worsted (#4) weight yarn held together instead, to achieve a similar yarn weight.

Exact gauge isn’t too important, so you can just use this as a guide.
4″ (10cm) square = 10 hdc x 5 rows
working in the third loops of the hdc stitches and using a 12mm hook.

You will need:
Super Chunky (US Super Bulky) #6 weight yarn - approx. 700g (615yds),
12mm crochet hook,
Large eyed yarn needle,
Scissors.

Kids sizes:
You can scale this scarf pattern down for kids sizes too. For young children (up to 10yrs), I would suggest using Worsted weight yarn with a 7mm hook, so it’s not too heavy. For older kids (10-16yrs), use 2 strands of Worsted weight with a 10mm hook. Keep the hook size larger than recommended for the yarn weight to keep the ‘loose knit’ look. Follow the guideline of measuring from the hip, around the neck, and down to hip again for the appropriate scarf length.
