For this blanket I used Bernat Premium Yarn in 10 different colours (full supply list below). But, you definitely do not need to use all 10 or even the palette I’ve chosen. Stash bust and use whatever you have on hand. I had picked a few of these up from an estate sale some years ago and purchased the rest from Walmart. These 10 skeins will make a few projects for sure! So far, I’ve crocheted 2 granny square vests, this blanket and a couple smaller projects, so they’ll go a long way. Keep in mind, because I bordered each granny square and the entire blanket in white, you will definitely use more of this colour.

Not everyone wants to hear this but I do recommend steam blocking the blanket pre-assembled (especially the quarter squares) and again once its assembled because it will be much easier to crochet the border on and also because the quarter and half granny squares don’t always lay flat which makes it difficult to assemble. It only takes a minute to do and yields really great results. There was once a time I loathed wet or steam blocking and now I love it because it really does clean things up (ie: your stitches) and make your piece pop!

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

CROCHET HOOK
5mm | H8

YARN
Bernat Premium Worsted Weight Yarn in (I’ve used a lot of colors; you do not need every color listed, simply choose 3 if you want to keep things simple and on budget. We will be using this yarn for 2 other projects I have planned so stay tuned for those!):

  • White (x2) this colour will be the base

  • Lilac
  • Pink Macaroon
  • Coral Peach

FOR THIS PATTERN YOU WILL NEED TO CROCHET:

18 full sized granny squares
10 half granny squares
4 quarter granny squares

Each granny square consists of 6 rounds. Choose what color combination you like. For some, I did 4 different colours for 4 rounds and white for the final 2 rounds. For others, I did 2 rounds of each colour, ending with 2 rounds of white. Be creative and make your own colour combos, or look over my blanket and the different colour combos I chosen and copy them.

After you have completed all of your full squares, half squares and quarter squares, start arranging your squares on the floors to your liking. It’s helpful to use locking stitch markers and piece together your diagonal rows.

Diagonal Row Set Up:

R1: quarter

R2: half, full, half

R3: half, 3 full, half

R4: half, 5 full, quarter

R5: quarter, 5 full, half

R6: half, 3 full, half

R7: half, full, half

R8: quarter

For this pattern, you will be assembling your blanket in diagonal rows using an invisible seam to sew them together. All the details, including how to crochet each granny square size is in the video. So, follow along there if you’re not familiar with crocheting the different granny square sizes. You will find it incredibly helpful to steam block your pieces before assembling and once again after you have assembled to ensure your crochet border goes on without a hitch.
