Super Farnese
Super Farnese is a modern triangle-shaped shawl named after the amazing Farnese gardens on Palatine Hill, Rome. This design is a younger sister of the Farnese shawl. I wondered if I could knit the same lace stitch pattern in bulky yarn. Super Farnese is an answer to this question, and the result is stunning!
The texture on the body of the shawl is created by a garter stitch and an all-over repeat of a botanical lace pattern, which is finished with a garter stitch border. Icelandic bind-off helps create a final extra touch to the edge. This shawl is ultra-quick to knit and very warm because of the Malabrigo Rasta used.
Finished measurements: The sample is 51” / 130 cm wingspan and 25.5”/ 65 cm deep, schematic on p.7.
Materials
• Yarn: 2 skeins of Rasta by Malabrigo Yarn 90 yards/ 5.29 ounces, 82 meters/ 150 grams, 100% Merino; Approx. 175 yards/ 160 meters of Super Bulky weight yarn that knits up to the gauge. The sample was knit using Rasta in 23 Pagoda.
• Suggested Needles: US 15 (10 mm) circular needles
• Notions: 4 stitch markers, darning needle
Gauge: 8 stitches and 14 rows per 4 inches/ 10 cm after blocking with US 15 (10 mm) needles in Garter Stitch. Gauge is not crucial for this project but may affect finished measurements and yardage. If you are a loose knitter you may need more yarn.
Skills involved: Knitting and purling, increases and decreases, yarn-overs.
