Super Simple Socks
This pattern was developed as a method of teaching my students how to make a pair of socks that fit. I found that many viewed socks as being intimidating or too difficult, and wanted to come up with something that could help them! It is intended to be as simple as possible, using only familiar measurements, and teaches a few basic techniques without being overwhelming.
This is not strictly speaking a pattern, and does not use a definite gauge; it’s more of a recipe that lets you determine your own pattern. In the sample photo, I’ve used a different self-striping yarn for the toe and heel. The gauge and yarn listed are also from the sample, and should be taken as a guide and not an absolute!
The sock is worked top down in a single tube, with an afterthought or peasant heel, using the magic loop method. You will need to know how to do a crochet chain (for the cast-on), knit, purl, and knit decrease, and crochet bind-off. (I’ve added links to tutorials as needed.)
YARN
1-2 skeins of sock yarn, no thicker than sport weight or weight 3. You should estimate about 50g for kids’ socks, and 100g for adults.
TOOLS
From size 2/2.75mm to size 3/3.75mm needles; any smaller is not good for a beginner, and any bigger isn’t good for a sock (in my opinion!). The method has not been tested with bigger needles.
You will also need a crochet hook the same size as your needles.
I also made a sock calculator, which is hosted on my website and available for free, to do with this pattern. It will help you with exact numbers if you need them!
