Tested with various types of yarns, you can use whichever yarn you’d like, whether it’s worsted weight, bulky, or what-have-you! Just make sure that you use a crochet hook that fits with the yarn! For example, I would usually use a 4mm crochet hook for 4 weight yarn, a 5mm for 5 weight, and so on. Just make sure you use the same type of yarn for both the yellow and red parts!
