Supersonic Stockings
Knit stockings for family members and friends, your pets, or just for decoration in no time flat! Choose from three different folded cuffs and three different slipped-stitch colorwork patterns to give the stockings your own personal twist.
These stockings have many advantages over traditional stranded colorwork stockings:
-
Super-bulky weight means they work up really quickly—one more thing to check off your holiday list!
-
Slipped-stitch colorwork means you’ll only use one color per row, and there are no colorwork floats to catch on goodies or fingers
-
No need to worry about stranded colorwork tension making your stockings too narrow, so they’re easy to stuff and unstuff
-
Simple star toe uses only decreases, so no need for kitchener stitch
-
Easy to personalize—just choose the plain folded cuff and add a name or initial with duplicate stitch
SIZE
Circumference of leg: 12 in [30.5 cm]
Length from toe to top (measured vertically): approximately 13 in [33 cm]
MATERIALS NEEDED
Yarn:
Rowan Big Wool 100% merino; 87 yds/80 m per 100g skein; 2 skeins MC, 1 skein Color A, 1 skein Color B for all three stockings; shown in 49 Lichen (MC), 25 Wild Berry (Color A), and 48 Linen (Color B).
Note: The 49 Lichen colorway has been discontinued. For a similar look in Rowan Big Wool, use 43 Forest for the MC.
If substituting yarn, you will need approximately the following amounts of super-bulky yarn that knits to gauge:
MC: 50 yds/45 m per stocking
Color A: 25 yds/23 m per stocking
Color B: 25 yds/23 m per stocking
I recommend the following yarns for budget-friendly alternatives:
- Patons Classic Wool Bulky
- Bernat Softee Chunky
- Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick
Recommended needles (check gauge and change size if needed):
-Set of US #11 / 8.0 mm DPNs, or preferred type of needle for working a 12” circumference in the round
-Set of US #13 / 9.0 mm DPNs, or preferred type of needle for working a 12” circumference in the round (note: if using a short circular needle, you will also need DPNs or another type of needle for the toe decreases)
Notions:
Stitch marker, yarn needle
GAUGE
10.5 sts/ 16 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in colorwork patterns on larger needles.
