This cowl was inspired by a skein of handspun Targhee wool yarn. The coloring of it reminded me of the beaches in southern California. I wanted a stitch pattern that would evoke the soft ebb and flow of the tide onto a pristine beach, yet be simple and fun to knit. The pattern is all about the yarn, the simplicity of the stitch, and the enjoyment of the knit.

The pattern is five pages in length. (There are no charts). It is written so you can use that special skein of yarn, whether it be commercially spun or hand spun. There are multiple sizes included, each with an estimate of yardage required. Keep in mind that your yardage may be more or less depending on how tight or loose you knit, the yarn you are using, and your gauge. It’s always a good idea to give yourself a buffer of at least 15% more yarn than what you think you will need.

Added bonus…..the pattern looks the same on both sides so the cowl is reversible. It also means you may add a twist if so desired.

There are four sizes available…small, medium, large, and x-large. Yardage will vary according to size…..115 yds., 153 yds., 216 yds., 285 yds.

Gauge: 11 sts/4” (2.75 sts/inch) blocked in stockinette

Other Notions: Tapestry needle and stitch marker

The width of this cowl varied with the yarn I used. The one knit from handspun Targhee wool blocked to 8” wide, while the one knit from Cascade Baby Alpaca Paint blocked to 11” wide.

I used one skein of handspun Targhee wool yarn. The cowl made from this measured 40” in diameter and used 148 yards. I had five yards left over from a skein with 153 yards to start.

I used two skeins of Cascade Baby Alpaca Paint. The cowl made from this measured 50” in diameter and used 206 yards. I had 10 yards left over.
