If you have crocheted some of my shallow side-to-side asymmetrical triangular scarves you probably know how that system of increases and decreases typically works. So, now I have turned that system of increases and decreases upside down for a surprise ending! This surprise ending gives you an easy-to-wear shallow slightly asymmetrical V-shaped scarf that is a fun and interesting one skein project.

The stitch pattern is a four-row repeat for the entire scarf except for the set up rows, transition rows and final six rows.

The scarf starts with a few stitches at one tip and ends with a few stitches at the other tip, and has an interior mesh stitch pattern bordered on all sides with a scalloped edge. There is no need to add any additional edging, so when you are finished you are really finished!

I used one skein of the beautiful MadelineTosh Twist Light (fingering weight, 420 yards/100 grams). Use any skein of fingering weight yarn that is at least 420 yards to crochet a uniquely shaped scarf for yourself or for a friend. Find that perfect color and prepare to be surprised!

You have the option of crocheting the scarf with a size G or size F hook. The pattern uses about 95% of a 100 gram skein of fingering weight yarn when crocheted with a size G hook and proper gauge. If you do not want to work on this narrow margin and want to make sure you do not run out of yarn, use a size F hook or start with more than 420 yards of yarn.

Surprise Ending is an intermediate level crochet project.

• If you have crocheted one of my shallow asymmetrical scarves you will be able to work this pattern with ease.
• If you are a beginner crocheter and have not crocheted one of my easy shallow asymmetrical scarves, I recommend that you crochet one of them before you crochet this pattern. I recommend crocheting Just Breathe and/or Be Like a Sunflower first.

Skills required are counting four-row repeats and counting stitches. The pattern is not hard, but requires a certain level of concentration. It’s very important to read the whole pattern first to get an idea of how it works. And, while crocheting you will need to pay close attention when reading the instructions, especially when the stitch pattern changes. That’s why it’s called Surprise Ending. The last section is not predictable!
