Surprise Pleat
When knitting sideways, it’s very easy to make contrasting pleatsl The front is a very ordinary skirt. The back reveals a surprise pleat when the wearer walks. This also makes an otherwise straight skirt easier to walk in. The entire garment is knitted in one piece.
YARN, GAUGE, SIZE & MACHINE The length is limited by the number of needles on the machine. Hip size is unlimited. Use a light worsted yarn such as the Tamm Nordic used for the sample that can get a gauge of 4.5 stitches/6 rows/inch. Finished hip sizes from 24 to 66 cover sizes from tiny tots to plus sized adults. With small children only about 2” of ease is needed at the hip. Teens and average women usually like 4-6”. Plus sized ladies may prefer a little more. Ease refers to the amount that the actual garment is larger than the true body measurement.
