“Better to be without sense than misapply it as you do.”-Mr. Knightley

My favorite Jane Austen book has surprisingly always been Emma. Give me Mr. Knightley over Mr. Darcy anyday! I wanted to design something soft and elegant, like the heroin from this tale, using a simple fair isle pattern. Highbury, the fictional town where Emma takes place, is supposed to be in the area of England known as Surrey (hence the design name). This is an excellent beginner fair isle pattern for those of you that have wanted to try your hand at it. I didn’t want any of the wrong side of the fair isle exposed, so I decided to knit the cowl as one long tube in the round and then join the cast-on and bind-off together at the very end. You end up with a pretty warm cowl because of the double layer of fabric. The hand dyed yarn (Holly and Ivy Dyeworks-Holly Sock & Mini set) used in the design was created by myself, and was also inspired by this Austen novel. I hope you like this cowl and enjoy making it. Happy Knitting!
