Svanlaug is a semi-circular shawl with both Estonian and Shetland motifs. Patterning is worked on both RS and WS; there are no rest rows.

While the sample shawl was knitted in fingering weight yarn, the shawl can also be worked in laceweight. Instructions for enlarging the shawl by working more repeats of the final mesh motif are given in the pattern.

The motifs are charted only. The pattern has been testknitted.

Svanlaug is part of my series Along the Whale Road, which highlights yarns from places visited & settled by the Vikings. The sample shawl used single-flock Border Leicester yarn from Yorkshire, England.

The “whale road” is a Norse kenning for the sea.

Svanlaug was said to be the wife of Ragnar Lodbrok who led raids in England and on York.
