Traditionally, felted mittens have been a favourite for fisherman because they not only keep hands warmer than other options, but are also warm when wet. Felting creates a dense fabric which adapts to the size and shape of the wearer. This felted mittens pattern includes detailed instructions for knitting and felting, and makes a great stash buster whether or not you include stripes.

The cuff is knitted in superwash yarn, which may be any worsted weight superwash OR DK plus fingering superwash held together to equal worsted weight. The body of the mitts is knitted in any worsted weight yarn known for its ability to felt well. Darker shades work best, or any shade that has not been bleached.

Gauge does not need to be precise because the felting will determine the size, although two sizes are included in the pattern, Average Adult and (Large Adult).

The pattern is written for 2 circular needles, but is easily adapted for your preferred method.

Yarn: worsted feltable for hand plus superwash worsted or equivalent (DK + fingering) for cuff
Needles: Size 5mm circular or DPNs; size 3.5mm - 4mm for cuff

Gauge: 4.5 stitches per inch in stockinette with 5mm needles
