Sweet Baby Corn Blanket
This blanket was designed for a new arrival to some family friends of ours who live in Indiana, as a tribute to such a common sight in our landscape. Inspired from the corn fields of Indiana, this sweet baby blanket will keep your little one warm and you thinking of harvest year-round! The finals blanket is almost a square, due to different stitch sizes, and after blocking the leaves are symmetrical on either side, yet a little “organic” in their look – just like in nature! The blanket is pictured with a 5-month baby.
The blanket is worked from corner to corner – starting on the bottom right corner, increasing to the widest portion of the blanket, and then decreasing to the top left of the blanket. The color changes happen through intarsia color change, making the blanket almost double-sided. The hood is worked in the round during the last 5” of the blanket, with the silks added as tassels. Directions are written out by line, and also include a chart.
I highly recommend being at least at an intermediate level of knitting before attempting this pattern. The color work can be tricky, but more than that, you need to be able to increase and decrease seed stitch while maintaining the integrity of the stitch.
The yarn I used was Arucania, which was absolutely beautiful, but somewhat pricey. Alternative yarns: For corn: Hobby Lobby’s Baby Bee Sweet Delight in “banana” or “baby gold”, Michael’s Loops and Threads Snuggly Wuggly Dip Dye in “daffodils”, Snuggly Wuggly in “yellow”. For leaves: possibly Hobby Lobby Baby Bee Sweet Delight in “celery” or “baby sage”, possibly Michael’s Loops and Threads Snuggly Wuggly “fresh green”. These yarns will be of a similar weight to the DK, and you’ll only need to hold one strand throughout the whole blanket. I had a hard time trying to find a similar green for the leaves unfortunately!
You will need approximately 900 yards of the green, and 1,350 yards of the yellow.
