Sweet Ride Bike Seat Cover
Make a sweater for your bike - your tush will thank you too!
This pattern should work for most women’s saddles but may need adjusting for wider or longer saddles. Read carefully before you begin. Directions for a more custom fit are given in italics.
This cover is knit using basic garter and stockinette stitch and then felted. It can be left plain or embellished however you like.
The directions as written are to fit a recreational/comfort saddle which is 6 ½“ (16.5 cm) at the widest point on the seat, 2 ½” (6.5 cm) wide on the nose, 6 ¼“ (16 cm) from back to front, and 2 ¼” (6 cm) at the thickest part of the seat edge. There is a little wiggle-room because the size will vary with how much it is felted and the drawstring tie also allows for adjustment.
MATERIALS: The stripe top cover was knit with Nature Spun worsted (3.5oz 100 g / 245 yards 224 m) from Brown Sheep Company: Hurricane Seas, Natural, Peruvian Pink and Goldenrod. About 50 g total (all colors or for a solid color cover) is used. Any 100% wool yarn of similar weight can be used as long as it isn’t superwash. For the tie: about 45” of cording or shoelace.
NEEDLES: US 10 ½ (6.5 mm) dpns or 24” (60cm) circular needles; yarn needle
GAUGE: 4”x4” / 10cm x10cm = 12 sts x 16 rows. Test felting your swatch for amount of shrinkage is recommended. In the striped cover, the white and pink yarn did not felt the same as the blue and yellow, even though they are all the same brand and type. See Felting section included.
Examples of variations are shown and a chart for a Setesdal pattern is included.
