Matinee sets came about as a result of the pram. Because only the top half of the baby could be seen, these jacket and hat sets gradually replaced carrying shawls.

What at first was simply a means of keeping the top half warm later turned into something more elaborate. Handmade needle lace used in a garment indicated status; knitted lace was a less costly way of continuing this custom.

2 sizes: 0-6 | 6-9 months -- to fit chest: 41cm (16”) | 46cm (18”)

Materials:

  • 465-620 m (510-680 yds) / 150-200g fingering weight yarn (shown in Spring Rose colorway)
  • 1m (1yd) of 2cm (3/4”) ribbon
  • 50cm (20”) of 1cm (3/8”) ribbon
  • four 1cm (3/8”) diam. buttons

Tension/Gauge swatched in given lace pattern on 3.75mm needles (US 5)
