This project replicates a gift given to my mother at her birthday party when she turned 17. She invariably kept her Sweetheart Pin Cushion hanging near her sewing machine, full of sewing pins, hat pins and some needles.

When my niece lived in France for a year as a nanny to a French family, I made one of these for her and included it in the box of gifts the family shipped to her at Christmas time. When she unwrapped it, she could tell that the French family was very impressed. I think they had not thought that American women knew how to crochet!
