Swirl
Ridged lines of swirling colour bring texture to this simple hat design. The colour combinations are almost endless – what do you prefer? A vibrant colour pop or softly swirling ripples?
Techniques:
Knitting in the round, picking up stitches, Icelandic cast-off.
Measurements:
Sizes: preemie, newborn, 6 months, 12 months.
To fit head size: 30,35,40,45cm / 12,14,16,18 inches.
Finished size: 25,28.5,36,39.5cm /
10,11.5,14.5,15.75 inches.
Tension:
22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm/4inches in stocking stitch with larger needles.
The hat is worked in the round from the brim to the crown. The hat has a large, deep folded brim. This is a good opportunity to use a decorative cast-on if you would like, as it will be clearly visible on the finished hat. Just remember, that the brim will be folded upwards, so if your chosen cast-on has a clear right side, this should be worked on the INSIDE of the hat, so that it becomes visible after it is folded over. Once the main hat is completed, the swirling lines are worked separately. These use the Icelandic cast-off to create the look of a braided ridge of colour.
Yarn Choice:
Any DK weight yarn should be suitable for this project. This is an ideal time to use a strongly variegated yarn for the contrast colour.
