Top-down socks featuring delicate colourwork spirals picked out over bold blocks of colour. Stripes are worked through the gusset before a brief repeat of the colourwork pattern, and the socks finish with the choice of a short-row or decrease toe. This pattern is designed to use up those remnants of favourite sock yarn which you couldn’t bear to let go, and there is LOTS of mileage for fun with colours here. The sample socks play with the contrast of dainty colourwork swirls against striking colour stripes, while socks which use muted tones look gorgeously subtle and a two-colour version looks beautifully elegant.

YARN:

Multi-colour version for small (medium, large) socks:

• Main colour = 50g/200m (55g/220m, 60g/240m) fingering weight sock yarn
• 3 x contrast colours = 15g/60m (17g/68m, 20g/80m) fingering weight sock yarn for each contrast colour

Two-colour version for small (medium, large) socks:

• Main colour = 50g/200m (55g/220m, 60g/240m) fingering weight sock yarn.
• Contrast colour = 45g/180m (50g/200m, 55g/220m) fingering weight sock yarn

Sample socks use Travelknitter BFL Supersock (London Skies for the grey, Firecracker for the red), Travelknitter Pure Merino Sock (Jaipur for the yellow), and Uncommon Thread Tough Sock (for the orange).

NEEDLES AND NOTIONS:

• 2.25mm (US size 1) needles, or needle size required to achieve pattern gauge
• 2mm (US size 0) needles, or one size smaller than the needles required to achieve pattern gauge
• Stitch marker
• Tapestry needle

GAUGE AND SIZING:

• Gauge with larger needles (primary gauge) = 9 stitches and 11 rows per inch (36st/44 rows = 4 inches/10cm) over stranded colourwork using 2.25mm (US 1) needles.
• Gauge with smaller needles = 9 stitches and 12 rows per inch (36st/48 rows = 4 inches/10cm) over stranded colourwork using 2mm (US 0) needles.
• Your gauge might vary – please do a gauge swatch to be sure.
• Foot length is fully adjustable within this pattern.
