Meet the Sybil mittens, based on an original 1914 knitting pattern!

Originally published in some of the 1910s Fleisher’s Knitting and Crochet Manuals, these mittens evoke Edwardian charm yet transition seamlessly to a modern ensemble! The pattern includes the original 1914 instructions as well as an updated pattern with grades sizes, contemporary formatting and abbreviations, and instructions for the right mitten (which the original pattern seems to have forgotten!)

The Sybil Mittens are a bottom up, in the round mitten pattern worked with a combination cable & lace stitch motif on the center front. As I was working these up, I started asking myself: …wait a minute. Lace work in winter mittens? Interesting.. But the bizarre thing is, when I put on the finished pair I was surprised to find them to be rather warm! The cable at the center adds an extra layer of warmth and especially if worked in a wool or animal fiber, these will certainly be a cozy addition to any winter wardrobe!
