This beautiful heirloom shawl is an example of lace knitting, where lace patterned rows alternate with rows of plain knitting.
The pattern gives very clear instructions making it a good choice for first timers knitting a larger lace shawl.
The central square is knitted first on straight needles. It has a repeated motif that is a variation of Mrs. Montague’s Lace. (Mrs. Montague was a lady of the Chamber of Queen Elizabeth the First and she is said to have knitted black silk stockings for the Queen.) The border is knitted next using circular needles. The motif for the border is Shetland Print O’ The Wave (also called Trailing Leaf). Lastly the edging (which is a variation of Irish Lace Edging) is worked around the perimeter.
