Sydney the Pickled Monster
This creation was inspired by my grandmother, who is responsible for everything crafty I know and love. She used to make “pickled people” using a nylon stocking, sock, and needle sculpting; I had a whole collection of my very own! What better way to pay tribute to an amazing woman than to re-create something from the past…with a twist!
Meet Sidney, the Pickled Monster. We have to keep him in a jar when he is unsupervised, so he stays out of trouble! Sidney is lightly stuffed and can be removed for play, then placed back into his jar for safe-keeping. A friend of young and old, he is sure to brighten anyone’s day.
This pattern uses join-as-you-go technique. Facial features are sewn on at the end.
• Yarn: 175 yards light worsted weight in Purple. Small amount of bright orange for claws, black, red, and white for mouth and tongue. I used Caron SS. A thicker yarn may work but you will not be able to stuff him much, if at all (unless you try a smaller hook).
• Safety eyes: 15mm cat eyes (or similar).
• Darning needle.
• Polyfil. You will use a minimal amount of stuffing for him, so he
fits in his jar
• 24 oz pickle jar or similar.
• Hook: 3.5mm or smaller.
