Brioche stitches are a special kind of magic. They come together to create a beautiful open yet cozy fabric that is irresistible. When I designed this shawl, I wanted to marry the cushy comfort of brioche with some easygoing garter stripes and slipped stitch. There is also a tiny pop of stranded colorwork right at the top of the design to add a little extra fun. The half-pi shape is simple and meditative to knit. With the exception of a few increases at the very beginning, you only have to worry about increase rows six times throughout the shawl.

When you block Sylvan Spring, all that carefully stitched brioche opens up into a beautiful lacy pattern and the garter stripes take on a whole new shape. I hope this shawl finds you in good health, whatever season you wear it in!

Yarns Used: Emma’s Yarn, Practically Perfect Sock (Fingering, 80% Superwash Merino / 20% Nylon; 400 yards / 366 meters / 100 grams). 1 skein each in Terrazzo (A) and Aloha (B). Emma’s Yarn, Hella Hank (Fingering, 80% Superwash Merino / 10% Cashmere / 10% Nylon; 600 yards / 548 meters / 150 grams)

You may use any fingering weight yarn in three colors. I highly recommend high contrast colors for the most impact in both the brioche and striped sections.

NOTE: The brioche sections eat up yarn, so be sure to check your yardage. Actual yardage for the sample was 368 yards (336 meters) of A, 372 yards (340 meters) of B, and 480 yards (439 meters) of C, for a total of 1,220 yards (1,116 meters). The picot bind-off uses approximately 76 yards (70 meters) of yarn and can be done in any of the three colors.

Singles versus plied yarn may also impact your yardage totals. Actual yardage for the first sample I knit with single ply Lichen and Lace was 336 yards (307 meters) of A, 368 yards (337 meters) of B, and 392 yards (359 meters) of C, for a total of 1,096 yards (1,003 meters).
