Sylvatica
Sylvatica is relaxing semicircular shawl of expanding leaf lace with a hint of texture to give it depth. The design begins with a central flower then flows into a series of expanding leaves, gradually opening into the tracery of winter branches, before returning to the new leaves of spring.
The shawl can be worked in 2 sizes, and the edging can be extended a little to make use of remaining yardage. The design suits lace to heavy fingering weight yarn, of solid, semi solid, very subtle speckle, or gradient colouring.
The sample shows the shorter size and 12 wedges, making a half circle, however the pattern is written with 15 wedges as this fuller circle shape stays on the shoulders better. The depth and number of wedges can be varied to alter the length, width & yardage.
- The pattern is predominantly charts only, however the first 55 rows have also been written out to get you started.
- The shawl is offered in one main size, however it can be shortened or extended a little to make use of remaining yardage, and the number of wedges can be altered to adjust the width.
- The design suits lace to sport weight yarn, of solid, semi solid, very subtle speckle, or gradient colouring.
The shawl is named for the Beech tree (fagus sylvaticus), however the word sylvaticus means both wild and relating to the woods. Sylvatica refers to the feminine form of the word. More on this in my project notes, here.
Additional yardage notes can be found on my project page, linked above.
