Sylviane
Sylviane is a richly textured, lace and cable infinity scarf that may be doubled and worn as a warm cowl. There is also a small version (shown in the coral color). Due to the predominance of leaf motifs in the lace pattern, I named this design Sylviane, which is a French name meaning “from the forest.”
The cast-on edge begins with ribbing which flows into the bold lace stitch pattern of crossed leaves and diamonds. The first row of cables will naturally pull in the ribbing to form subtle scallops. The bind-off edge is tailored, with rows of reverse stockinette bisected by stockinette Vs that close up the final row of diamonds. Sylviane is worked in the round, so there is no grafting or joining required at the end. When you’re done knitting, just block and wear!
The Sylviane pattern includes both charts and full written out instructions for those of you who prefer not to use charts.
Sizes: The gray-colored Sylviane in the pictures, which was worked at the pattern size of a 48” (122 cm) circumference, was knitted with 310 yards (284 m) of Studio Worsted yarn from Neighborhood Fiber Company. The circumference may be easily customized to your preference; the width may be increased as well. Full instructions are provided, including how to calculate the number of cast-on stitches for any size.
A one-skein neck warmer size, which measures 9 x 24” (23 x 61 cm) and uses only 160 yards (91 m), is pictured in the coral-colored yarn; this was knitted up with Audubon Worsted from The Fiberists.
Yarn Weight: While directions, dimensions and yardage are provided for worsted weight, Sylviane could effectively be worked in other yarn weights, although DK weight or heavier is recommended for best results. Solid or tonal yarn is recommended for this design.
ERRATA: On the Bind Off section at the bottom of page 2, at the beginning of the 3rd line, it should read k1, pass the first stitch on the right needle over the second stitch… It currently says “k2.”
