I’ve recently become prone to fainting spells. Over the last few years, my body weight has settled in an “underweight” state, with very little body fat surrounding my petite frame. My blood pressure also leans towards the low end, all of which to say, subtle environmental impacts cause my body to “reboot”, so to speak. Although I know very little about the science behind this all, I have learned to read my body for the signs that I’m about to black out. My limbs get heavy, my vision starts to blur, the voices around me drone out, and my internal monologue gets loud. Thankfully, this also means I am often calm and self-aware enough to talk myself through getting to a safe place and lowering myself to the ground to wait for it to pass.

The texture of this sweater reminds me a lot of the fuzzy feeling just prior to fainting. It’s hard to explain how it’s not scary, but rather there’s a sense of peace in that moment of isolation; like my body knows the world has become too much to handle, and offers me some reprieve. What appears to be a flaw is actually the body’s incredible ability to turn chaos into tranquility, like wool into a sweater.
