This pattern has been tech edited and test knitted.

Tabibito means traveller in Japanese. The name rhymes with the fun sounding name ITOBITO, the yarn used for the design.

This pullover is knitted in the round from the top down, beginning with a slightly wide folded collar that is created by joining stitches on the working needle with stitches picked up from the cast-on edge. A simple way to pick up the exact number of stitches is created for this design and described in the instruction. Next, the neck is shaped with ​German Short Rows​. Increases on the shoulders widen the yoke. The work continues in the round to the underarms where sleeve stitches are placed on hold and underarm stitches are cast on. The body is worked in the round to the herringbone pattern and the hem. The sleeve stitches are picked up and worked in the round to the cuff. ​Tubular Sewn Bind-Off​ is used to finish the hem and cuffs.

NEEDLES

One 3.5 mm / US 4 circular needle, 40 cm / 16” for collar and neck.
One spare 3.5 mm / US 4 or smaller circular needle, 40 cm / 16” to make folded collar.
One set of 3.5 mm / US 4 DPNs or preferred needle for working sleeve in the round. 60 cm / 24” or longer cord for lengthening circular needle as work gets wider.
One 3.25 mm / US 3 needle circular 60 cm / 24” or longer for working hem.
One set of 3.25 mm / US 3 DPNs or preferred needle for working cuff in the round.

Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

GAUGE (after blocking)

With ​one strand of Y1 and one strand of Y2​ held together:
23 sts and 28 rows = 10 cm / 4” in Stockinette Stitch with 3.5 mm / US 4 needle.
28 sts and 27 rows = 10 cm / 4” in 1 X 1 Ribbing with 3.5 mm / US 4 needle.

Tabibitoというネーミングはもちろん日本語の旅人から来ており, このデザインに使用した糸の面白い響きの名前 ITOBITO と韻を踏んでいます.

プルオーバーは輪編みでトップダウンに編み, 開きが広めのダブル襟から編み始めます. 襟は編み針の目と作り目段から拾った目を一緒に編むことで合わせます. このデザイン向けに正確な目数を簡単に拾う方法を考案し, 編み方内に詳述しました. 次に, ドイツ式引返し編みで襟下がりを作り, 肩で増し目をしてヨークを広げます. ヨークは輪編みで脇下まで編み, 袖を休み目にして脇下の目を作り目します. 身頃はヘリンボーン模様と裾まで輪編みします. 袖は最後に輪編みで袖口までトップダウンに編みます. 裾と袖口は1目ゴム編み止めで仕上げます.
