This pattern was originally released as the July 2013 pattern for the 2012 Twisted Cowl Club.

Tabitha Babbitt was a Shaker who invented the first circular saw in 1813. Her innovation was remarkable for its simplicity and for the revolutionary impact it had on the lumber industry. This cowl made me imagine her eureka moment, which happened after she saw the wasted effort of the long saws two people had to operate. Garter stitch and bold saw-tooth shapes are a nod to Shaker simplicity of form and also make this cowl a good choice for highly variegated yarns.

Yarn - 420 yards fingering-weight 280 yards worsted-weight. Fingering-weight cowl shown in Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (100% superwash merino; 420 yards/384 meters/100 gram skein), colorway: Spectrum. Worsted-weight cowl shown in Imperial Stock Ranch Anna (70% wool, 30% cotton; 140 yards/128 meters/113 gram skein), colorway Natural.
Gauge - 5.5 stitches and 5 ridges 3.5 stitches and 3 ridges = 1” in garter stitch, before blocking.
Needles - US #6/4mm US #10/6mmize to get gauge) for working flat.
Notions - Tapestry needle, split ring marker, 3 1.5”-ish buttons.
Skill level - Beginner (increasing, decreasing, counting rows).
Size/Finished measurements - One size fits most. 46” 52” long by 9” wide,
measured point to point unblocked.
