This pattern is for a set of three scarves knit in the round using fingering weight yarn. There is a tasseled scarf, a circular “infinity scarf” and a cowl version. All feature a simple lace pattern, edged with sections of Stockinette, garter stitch and eyelet holes.

Like many people, I love hand-dyed sock yarns, but don’t always want to knit socks with them. Why hide such beautiful yarn on your feet? Scarves and cowls knit out of fingering weight yarn are the perfect way to show off those lovely yarns and also make great portable projects and quick gifts.

I never go anywhere without my knitting and am always looking for small projects that will keep me interested but are not so complicated that they can’t be knit on the go. After I brought one of the prototypes for these scarves on a backpacking trip in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York and found it to be great backpacking knitting, I decided to name the pattern Tahawus, meaning Cloud-Splitter, after the Native American name for Mount Marcy, New York’s highest peak.
