Taihi (対比) means contrast in Japanese. The design is Inspired by my impression of Tokyo as a city of contrast - a strange mix of energies, both dynamic and vibrant, yet rhythmic and peaceful. The rhythm of the linear lace pattern that changes directions, and the flexibility in arranging contrasting colours to express different energies, represent my image of Tokyo.

One crochet hook of approximately 3.5 mm / JPN 6/0 / E-4 for provisional cast-on and Russian grafting.

GAUGE (after blocking)

20 sts and 40 rows in Lace Pattern A with 3.5 mm / US 4 needle = 10 cm / 4” in width and 11 cm / 4¼” in height

NOTIONS

Stitch marker, stitch holder or waste yarn for holding stitches, smooth waste yarn in contrasting colour (of similar weight as working yarn) for provisional cast-on, tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

NOTES AND TECHNIQUES

Begin the cowl with provisional cast on using one of the colourways. Knit lace patterns in the round to form a tube, then place stitches on hold. Repeat using the other colourway. Join the two tubes using Russian grafting to create a double layer cowl.

The lace patterns are worked over a multiple of 5 sts. You can modify the circumference of your cowl by casting on a different number of sts that is a multiple of 5. Instructions are written for 2 sizes. The second size is slightly larger and wider than the first with more stitches in the round, as well as extra pattern repeats vertically.

このカウルは、東京という都市が煌々としたネオンサインの不思議なエネルギーと絶え間ない人や車の流れとが混ざり合い、ダイナミックで活気に満ちていながら、リズミカルで穏やかな、対照的な都市であるという印象から生まれました。方向を変える直線的なレース模様のリズムと、さまざまなエネルギーを表現する対照的な色の配置の柔軟性が、私の東京のイメージを表現しています。

注意と技術

1色を使い、別鎖の作り目で編み始める。筒の形にするために輪にし、レースパターンを編む。目を休める。もう1色で同じことを繰り返す。筒をロシアとじで合体して二重のカウルにする。

レースパターンは5の倍数になる。好みの寸法にするには、5の倍数で作り目するとよい。以下の編み方では、2つのサイズの編み方を説明している。サイズ2は、サイズ1より若干大きめで幅も広めになる。
