Tall Ribbed Beanie
The Tall Ribbed Beanie is a knitted beanie with 2x2 ribbing that is customizable to your unique head measurements! It will fit everyone’s head like a dream, and the satisfying 2x2 rib design will make you want to pair it with every fall and winter outfit.
Pattern Format:
The Tall Ribbed Beanie is an interactive, made-to-measure pattern that calculates the number of stitches, rows, and yardage for a pattern. The benefit of this type of pattern is that it makes your pattern size-inclusive to virtually any body size (theoretically, it should even work for an infant!) and it allows you to use any yarn and any gauge! This is done by allowing the user to type in their body’s measurements and gauge onto the pattern. Then, in the background, the pattern will calculate all the math within the pattern to fit the person perfectly.
It is recommended that the pattern is accessed through Adobe Reader.
Construction:
To achieve the triple-fold brim, we start with 2x2 ribbing on the wrong side (WS). Eventually, the brim is folded by essentially “zipping” together the live stitches with your cast on edge. Then rounds of stockinette are worked, and one German Short Row is done to flip to the right side (RS). Once flipped, the purl side of the stockinette rows will be facing you. The ribbing pattern is resumed to create the body of the hat, and decreases are worked to shape the crown. What the finished hat will look like when the brim is unfolded. Notice the purl stitches showing on the RS
Sizing and Fit:
This pattern is written to be customizable to your exact head circumference. The length of the beanie is calculated in proportion to your head circumference, and is designed to have a few inches of length above the crown of your head. Making it as a gift and don’t have exact measurements? No worries! Average sizes are linked within.
Yarn:
You can use any weight and any size yarn for this pattern!
However, I recommend DK or worsted weight yarn for optimal results.
Amount of yarn needed:
The amount of yarn you need depends on what kind of yarn you use and your measurements.
Average yardages needed per weight of yarn for an adult-sized beanie are listed below for your reference with more specific estimates provided within the pattern:
- DK: 298 - 421 yards
- Worsted: 159 - 230 yards
Recommended Yarn:
If you’re interested in making a Tall Ribbed Beanie using the same yarn used in the photographed samples, use Chikan Yarn from Sierra Yarns. Use code NEWWAVEKNITTING for 15% off.
You should need only one skein for a head circumference up to 24 in (61 cm). The recommended needle size is 5mm for Needle Size A and 4.5mm for Needle Size B. The recommended gauge for this yarn is 16 stitches by 24 rows.
Materials:
- 4 Locking Stitch Markers (3 in one color/design and 1 in another)
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
- Measuring Tape
Gauge:
You can use any gauge! However, it is very important that you gauge swatch and determine your gauge before working this pattern in order to determine how many sts and rows you need to work throughout this pattern to get the exact right fit.
Needles:
You can use any size of circular needles for this pattern. I recommend using a needle size that creates a nice fabric with the yarn you’ve chosen to work with.
In terms of types of needles, you will need:
- Needle Size A: Main working needle size that you used to achieve gauge
- Needle Size B: Same size as Needle Size A, or 0.5mm bigger or smaller. We will use this needle for the cast on method
Types of needles you can use:
- 16 in (40 cm) circular needles
- double pointed needles (DPNs) OR 36 in (90 cm) + circular needles to use with the magic loop method
Techniques needed (step-by-step instructions AND video references are included for each technique):
- 2x2 ribbing in the round
- Decreases
- Folding a brim
- German short rows
