Tam O'Shanter Scottish Cap
by T. Beck
Immortalized in Robert Burns’ epic poem (c. 1791), “Tam O’Shanter,” the wool tam has been worn by Scots for centuries. This iconic floppy cap has shaped pop culture, from Benjamin Bunny to the characters in our favorite Scottish literature. This take on the classic tam includes options for felting, sizes S/M/L, and choice of toppers.
NOTES
- Gauge: Using worsted or aran weight yarn, gauge is 16-20 stitches to 4” on US 7-9 needles.
- Size: Small (unfelted) will fit a 21” head loosely. If you are a tight knitter, if you use the smallest needle size, or if you plan to felt the cap, I recommend sizing up. You can continue to felt the cap to achieve the desired size.
- Yarn: Be sure to use 100% wool if you plan to felt the cap, or wear it near a fire (not superwash, or an acrylic blend). Wool felts nicely, is absorbent, and is naturally flame resistant.
