This is a beginner-friendly, easy to make pattern that consists of a small tangyuan amigurumi, a large tangyuan amigurumi, and a partially “eaten” tangyuan amigurumi.

The small and large tangyuan are basically crocheted spheres. The partially “eaten” tangyuan consists of the main body, the filling and the 3rd optional part, the dribble.

The small tangyuan measures around 1.8cm~2cm across, and the larger tangyuan around 3cm~3.5cm across. The partially “eaten” tangyuan measures around 4cm by 5.4cm by 2.8cm.

The amigurumi was inspired by tangyuan, i.e. Chinese glutinous rice balls, a traditional Chinese dish that has been eaten by Chinese people around the world since ancient times. Although we now eat it whenever we want, tangyuan is a traditional food made and eaten by the Chinese and Peranakans during Dongzhi (the Winter Solstice) and the Yuanxiao Festival, the last day of Chinese New Year, as a symbol of harmony and family reunion.
