Tannery Road Mittens
While researching a name for this design, I discovered a Norwegian connection to my home province. Norwegian merchant ships that were at sea when Norway was invaded early in the Second World War were redirected to friendly ports throughout the world. A military training centre and barracks were established at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, to house about 800 men. The buildings and a monument to Camp Norway can today be found on Tannery Road in Lunenburg.
The Tannery Road Mittens are designed and knit following the Selbu mitten style and construction tradition. Suitable for knitters with some experience.
ERRATUM: Written instructions: Left thumb gusset increases start after 17, not 18, sts. Chart is correct. (19/11/22)
Pattern is written for an adult-sized mitten measuring approximately 11” long with a circumference of 9”. Adjust size by adjusting gauge.
Tools and Materials:
Yarn: Briggs and Little Sport, 1 x 113g skeins in each of two colours.
Rauma Finull, 1 x 50g balls in each of two colours.
Choose colours that contrast well to show the design to best advantage.
Needles to give gauge of the type preferred for small-circumference knitting (dpns, 2 circs, long circ)
2.5mm was used for samples
2 ring stitch markers, darning needle
My thanks to p4chen and the knitography virtual community for their encouragement to jump into the world of designing. This pattern would not be here without their support.
