(HAIM, Anne Chapman)

ENGLISH

This design is inspired by TANU, one of the spirits represented in the HAIN ceremony belonging to the original people of the Selk’nam, who inhabited Tierra del Fuego in the extreme south of America.

TANU was voluminous and tall, different from the other representations of the spirits by its shape, for which they used a frame made of guanaco leather that they painted with red and white paint and put feathers on it.

“Bridges says Tanu was cruel and malicious, although not as cruel as Xalpen, while Gusinde says she was gentle, cheerful, potbellied and harmless. According to this author, the creativity of Selk’nam’s fantasy was manifested in this spirit. But why were there such conflicting impressions about Tanu? I suppose that Tanu was on a different conceptual plane than the other spirits; she was created as a witness, a kind of judge, or perhaps she was an envoy from Xalpen.”- (HAIM, Anne Chapman)
