Tarot Card Sweater
Knitting can be an act of transformation and intentionality, and I think the meaning you hold in your head while creating your sweater can transform you as well. Whether you choose your card chart because it has a meaning you’d like to bring into your future, or just because you think it’s a fun design, I hope you love knitting it and love wearing it in your bright future ahead :)
ABOUT A crewneck sweater with a modified drop shoulder silhouette, which comes with color charts for 5 tarot cards: THE STAR, THE SUN, THE MOON, THE LOVERS, DEATH.. and a 6th that I think should be a card: THE KNITTER. All charts come in two sizes, for sizes 1 - 5 and 6 - 9, to keep the design proportionally scaled across all sizes. The sweater is worked top-down, with the body being worked flat and the collar and sleeves worked in the round. Ladderback Jacquard is recommended for catching long floats in the color charts, a surprisingly intuitive technique that’s great for any colorwork knitter to have in their toolkit.
GAUGE: 20-21 st, 26 rows = 4” (10.16 cm) on US 5 (3.75 mm) needles in stockinette, after blocking.
NEEDLES & TOOLS:
- US 5 (3.75 mm) needles (or whatever needle size achieves gauge), for knitting body flat
- US 3 (3.25 mm) needles for ribbed hem on body
- US 3 & US 5 DPNs or circular cable for magic loop, for knitting the sleeves and collar in the round
- 2 locking stitch markers
SIZES: Sizes 1; 2; 3; 4; 5; 6; 7; 8; 9 are designed to be worn with 6” (15 cm) of positive ease at the bust. The finished full bust measurements are 36”; 40”; 44”; 48”; 52”; 56”; 60”; 64”; 68” or
91.5 cm; 101.5 cm; 112 cm; 122 cm; 132 cm; 142 cm; 152.5 cm; 162.5 cm; 172.5 cm. See the photos for the full sizing chart.
YARN: Cascade Sport 220 (100% Peruvian highland wool; 50g / 150m / 164 yds per skein). Estimated yarn per size is 6; 7; 8; 9; 10; 11; 12; 13; 14 skeins of main color, and 0.5 skeins of the contrast color.
In yardage, this is approximately 950; 1100; 1200; 1375; 1525; 1750; 1925; 2100; 2200 yards or 850; 1025; 1100; 1250; 1375; 1600; 1775; 1900; 2025 meters of the main color yarn, and about 75 yards or meters of contrast color yarn.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Best for intermediate knitters who have some colorwork experience, as the colorwork is worked flat from a chart using ladderback jacquard- it helps to have some experience reading charts and doing stranded knitting, though you don’t need prior experience with ladderback jacquard.
