Tartan & Tweed Tam HERE

Tartan & Tweed Mitts have impressive Fair Isle looks with utmost simplicity. A little like tartan, a little like tweed, the fabric is interesting as it is uncomplicated. Seamless construction continually stranded around without having to cut or weave in any ends but for the start and finish. A unique thumb construction that allows colorwork to continue into thumb. Colors of your family’s clan tartan make an excellent choice, or three shades of one color, or two. Pattern now includes full mitten option. Mix it up and change it around, that is the magic of this simple Fair Isle design !

Child - Women’s S: 6.5”-7” 16-18cm hand. Yarn: Fingering-Sport weight Gauge: 6.5-7 sts=1in. Suggested Needles: US 3 - 4 3.25 – 3.5 mm.

Women’s M/Men’s S: 7”-7.5” 17-19cm hand. Yarn: Sport-DK weight. Gauge: 6-6.5 sts=1in. Suggested Needles: US 4 – 5 3.50 – 3.75 mm.

Men’s M/Wom’s L - Men’s L: 7.5”- 8” 19-21cm hand. Yarn: Aran-Worsted weight. Gauge: 5.5-6 sts=1in. Suggested Needles: US 5 - 6 3.75 – 4 mm.

Yardage: Approx. 60y (54m) each in 3 colors, or 80y (74m) each in 2 colors, of sport weight yarn. Yardage is approximate and does not reflect yarn substitutions or garment length & mitten options, so have on hand more than enough so that you can improvise instruction if necessary.

Needles: Choose needle size according to yarn weight (see above size /gauge section). You will also need one size smaller than size to get gauge, for ribbing.

Skills: Great for first Fair-Isle project, but level demands experience in knitting. Knitting in-the-round. Colorwork using 2 colors in a round. Keeping in colorwork pattern through shaping of gusset. Increasing M1L & M1R. Decreasing ssk & k2tog. Intermediate level.

Noteworthy feature: There is a wide gusset base and bridge of thumb gusset nicely recessed into hand, with a very gradual increase. This is so that the colorwork can continue from gusset up and around the circumference of thumb, as well as hand, without jog or break in pattern.
