This month we are featuring Lowanna Yarns, own and dyed by Sue. The name Lowanna comes from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘beautiful girl’. As the first child to immigrant parents, her dad felt it was important to acknowledge their new home, so it is also her middle name. Sue lives in gorgeous Tasmania. She was introduced to the beauty of indie dyed yarn while living in the UK and began dyeing a few years ago. Sue is really drawn to vibrant colours and loves the different colours that can be achieved. She tends to draw her colour inspiration from nature and loves the tactile experience of working with soft, luxurious yarns.

When designing for a yarn feature I try and design with the dyers yarn story in mind. This months feature’s colour was inspired by the Tasmania Sky on a fresh clear morning which can be see whilst she enjoys her morning coffee. The pattern consists of knits, purls and twisted stitches which gives the appearance of the sky with its beautiful blues and a sprinkle of clouds.

The sock yarn for this pattern is 80% SW Merino, 10% Cashmere, and 10% Nylon. It is super soft and and a little indulgence for your feet.

The pattern also includes the DTYH signature size panel along each side of the instep allowing for easy customization. The size panel is made up of purl or twist stitches worked to form the rungs, against a plain background. This pattern is known in gansey and clan design as the Ladder of Life, symbolizing Health and Happiness.
