Afghan Square General Instructions

Please note that the instructions included in this booklet are updated from when this afghan originally appeared in Twists and Turns®: The Newsletter for Lovers of Cable Knitting. The afghan has been reknit in a currently available yarn. Written instructions, as well as charts, are now given for each square. Comments which appeared as part of the pattern have—for the most part—been retained in their original form. In some cases, I have included additional background information.
Each square begins by casting on 51 stitches using the Long-Tail Cast-On. (I don’t usually specify cast-on methods in my patterns, but I found this to be the best method for these squares.) Following the cast-on row, work six rows of Garter stitch, increasing as specified in the last row of Garter stitch to accommodate any cable splay. The first three and last three stitches of every row will be knit in Garter stitch. Decrease to 51 stitches on the first row of Garter stitch after completing the pattern and work five additional rows of Garter stitch before binding off.
