Teacher's Pet
Some memories stay with you through the years. I can still recall the halcyon Spring days when I was oh-so-young, with the eternity of Summer stretching ahead. Only six or seven, wearing my best blue dress (made by my mother!), white lace ankle socks, and shiny patent leather shoes, I hurried to school that day clutching a surprise in my little hand.
A “nosegay” (still love that word!) made up by my mother to present to Mrs. Butler, my much-beloved teacher. Freshly picked Lily of the Valley, pansies, violets, and (best of all), it was cuddled by a paper lace doily! (Maybe that’s why I still love knitting and crocheting lace…).
How excited I was as I skipped over the cracks in the sidewalk, how proud to present Mrs. Butler with her little bouquet! She would ask me (in front of the whole class!) if the flowers came from my garden, and would thank me, maybe even give me a hug (chills!!!). All day my little flowers would sit in their place of honor in a paper cup on her desk; she would occasionally sniff the delicate scent as it wafted through the room, blown by the Spring breeze from the open classroom windows. I guess I was always trying to be the “Teacher’s Pet;” maybe sometimes I still am…
