Teddy Bear: Bertram Bear
Bertram is a medium-sized bear standing about 14 inches tall (9 inches sitting) if you use eyelash yarn and 3.5mm needles. He has moveable arms and legs but a fixed, sewn-on head. You can use string-joints, instructions given in the making up section, or his arms and legs could instead be sewn into any position you choose, a method I recommend for new bear-makers and for bears intended for children.
YARN
You will need 100 gms/about 180m of eyelash yarn like Stylecraft Eskimo or King Cole Moments.
You will also need a small amount, say 25gm of DK weight yarn for the muzzle and paw pads.
NEEDLES
3mm (US 3) and 3.5mm (US 4) knitting needles.
A yarn sewing needle and a long, thin doll needle for sewing the eyes on.
Long, thin knitting needles or something similar to help with positioning the arms and legs.
NOTIONS
A pair of sew-in 10 or 12 mm glass eyes or beads if the bear is NOT intended for a child. You can embroider eyes or sew on felt ones for babies and children under three. (You can get glass eyes in different sizes from any bear-making supply shop, eg Bear Basics or Christie Bears online.)
Thin black yarn and felt to embroider or sew a nose on, or any other colour you prefer. Strong thread for string joints, if required.
Some toy filler (stuffing/fibrefill/polyester filling) and scissors.
There are detailed instructions and photos to help you put your bear together. The photos are all in the last few pages so that you don’t have to print them if you don’t want to.
Happy bear making!
