Teeling was a holiday gift for Gabriella, who you probably recognize at left - and from so many other patterns of mine!
When she mentioned to me that she coveted a simple, chunky hat with a brim, I figured it was high time to design something just for her. And as luck would have it, I had just returned from visiting my Magpie Fiber friends in Maryland with the perfect yarn. Squishy Quartet Bulky, in this deep, rich black - so this went straight onto the needles!
I used classic lines and added a minimal amount of texture to show off the subtly dyed yarn. Crown shaping needed to be bold and eye catching. The brim had to be cozy. And voila! Teeling is a quick, satisfying knit with thick ribs, seed stitch, and a great fit.
In fact, so satisfying that that after knitting two Teelings with my Quartet skeins, I wanted to knit another. My third sample was knit from stash in Bread and Butter Bun from Verb For Keeping Warm, and it proves that Teeling looks great with or without a folded brim.
Sizes
18(20,22)”/45.75(50.75,56)cm circumference.
About 9.5”/24.25 deep with brim folded, 11”/28cm unfolded.
Hat stretches when worn. Choose the size just smaller than your actual head for a snug fit.
Yardage Needed
85(105,125)yds
80(100,115)m
Bulky weight yarn needed I suggest a solid, semi-solid, tweed or heather without much vareigation. Your fiber should have some memory to it for a snug fit.
Note that the second size uses almost one complete skein of Quartet. If modifying for a larger or deeper size, you may need 2 skeins.
