Needles: 4 - 4.25mm or size needed to obtain gauge. (I used 4.25mm needles. I know a lot of people will not have this size of circular needles. see notes below)
Yarn: APROX. 370 yrds each color, 740 yrds total. Sample knit in Knit Picks Gloss DK, 3 skeins color 1 (I used colorway Hawk) and 3 skeins color 2 ( I used Velveteen).
Gauge: 20st/40rows = 4” in garter stitch.
Finished Garment Size: 56.5in wide x 27in from top to point.
This is a wonderfully soft, drapey shawl that is absolutely perfect for so many occasional. It’s great to use as a gorgeous scarf on a cold winter day or as a wrap for a chilly spring or fall evening. It’s even great to bring along when you plan to be in a super air-conditioned room during summer (you know, like movie theatres, am I right?)
The shawl uses alternating stripes that slowly reduce in size making the basic garter stitch have an interesting effect (not basic!) and also a really lovely lace panel to add that delicate and pretty factor.
I used Knit Picks Gloss DK in colorways Hawk and Velveteen. However, I know Knit Picks tends to be on the pricey side (usually worth it). Bernat Softee Baby has a similar gauge, drape, and softness so it makes a great substitute. Also, Caron Simply soft is an adequate substitution as well. Though, its gauge isn’t quite the same and its softness/drape is also a bit different.
I own the Japanese version of the Clover Takumi interchangeable circular needles set. In my set, there is a JP size 7 (4.25mm) This size does not exist in all circular knitting sets. Because of this, I believe a 4mm or US6 UK8 would work nicely if you don’t have the 4.25mm. As always, swatch swatch swatch just to make sure you’re going to get what you’re setting out for. You might want to up the size instead and use a 4.5mm, who knows (you’ll know if you swatch… lol)
I used 3 skeins of each color in Knit Picks Gloss DK. However, in the velveteen, I ended up playing a bit of Yarn Roulette with it because I carried my yarn throughout the project. To be absolutely sure you have enough yarn, you can buy a 4th skein of whichever color you plan to use for the lace panel. Or, you can be a rebel like me, and just see what happens!
As always HAPPY KNITTING!
