Notes from the Designer:

Tempietto, or “little temple” in Italian, is the name of a beautiful Renaissance building in Rome designed by Donato Bramante in 1502. It has a rounded dome, lovely columns, and is considered by some to be the epitome of Renaissance architecture because of its balance and harmony. This pi shawl features lace patterns that resemble arched colonnades, windows, and vaulted ceilings, which are reminiscent of the features in its namesake’s design. The gradual shift of colors from dark to light also help to bring your gaze ever upwards to the beauty all around us, if we will but look up! The lace patterns are modified from stitches found in Vogue Knitting Stitchionary, vol 5, edited by Carla Scott. I hope you enjoy knitting this pi shawl and that it brings some joy and beauty to your wardrobe.

  • Click here to watch a video on how to work the Magic Loop, read circular charts, and work the ssk and cdd stitches.
  • The shawl is worked in the round, starting in the center and gradually increasing until it reaches its final circumference.
  • The pattern includes both written and charted instructions. You will need to be able to read charts to knit this shawl.
  • A knitted border, which serves as a decorative finish, is used to bind off the shawl. You’ll begin the border with a provisional cast on, working the chart back and forth to catch the live shawl stitches and incorporate them into the border. Then you will finish by grafting the final stitches to the provisional cast on using the Kitchener Stitch.
