Tenby is an idyllic seaside village in Southwest Wales that has long been on my bucket list of places I’d like to visit. The Tenby Shawl takes its name from this scenic Welsh town because the lace border reminds me of the cute row house cottages and cobbled streets while the body of the shawl brings to mind the vast coastal vistas of the Pembrokeshire coastline.


Worked from the top down, Tenby can be as large or as small as you’d like. It’s designed to use that special skein of yarn that you picked up on vacation and has been languishing in your stash for ages. Choose either garter or stockinette stitch for the body, whichever will let your yarn shine! Once the shawl has reached your desired size, the lace is knit without increases and will finish your shawl in a fun complementary color.

Yarn: You will need a variegated or speckled color for the body and a coordinating solid or tonal fingering weight yarn for the border in these approximate amounts:

Small: 417 yds (381 m) / 90 g for the body; 210 yds (192 m) / 50 g for the border.

Large: 600 yds (549 m) / 150 g for the body; 400 yds (366 m) / 95 g for the border.

Needles: I suggest using a circular needle with at least a 
32 in (80 cm) cord.

For the Stockinette Body: US 3 (3.25 mm)

For the Garter Stitch Body: US 5 (3.75 mm)
