This tomato amigurumi is a quick and easy make, ideal as sustainable play food and a great item to sell at craft fairs.

While you do need a little bit of crocheting experience to make the Tender Tomato, you don’t need to be an expert. Beginner crocheters should also be able to pick this pattern up and get started right away as long as they know the basic crochet stitches.

The pattern is available for free on my blog here. However, if you’d prefer the ad-free version as a PDF download, this can be purchased from my Ravelry store.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Aran/Worsted Weight yarn. I used Rico Designs Creative Cotton Aran in the following colours: Red (13 grams = 22.1 m / 24.2 yds) and Green (1 gram = 1.7 m / 2 yds).
  • Crochet hook: Size 3.5 mm (E)
  • Other materials: Stuffing, needle, scissors, pins, stitch marker

Tomato Size

With the yarn and hook mentioned above, my amigurumi tomato turned out to be 7 cm / 2.75 ” high (from the base to the top of the middle stem) and 6 cm / 2.36 ” wide.

Gauge

Gauge is not required for this pattern, however for reference my gauge was as follows:
11 sc stitches on 5 cm / 1.96 “
11 rows on 5 cm / 1.96 “

Additional Information

  • Pattern language: English
  • Pattern terms: US terms
  • Stitches used: Magic circle, sc, ch, sl st, increases and decreases
  • Yarn: The yarn choice is completely up to you, and you can change the yarn weight, material, and colours based on your own personal preference. Just be aware that the weight of your yarn may impact the hook size you need to use and also the size of your final make.
  • Hook size: I recommend using a smaller hook size than recommended on the yarn label. This will stop the stuffing appearing through your stitches.
  • Working in rounds: The majority of this pattern is worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated.
  • Shaping: A sewing technique is used to shape the amigurumi tomato so it stays in place. Instructions are included within the pattern.
  • Copyright: You are more than welcome to sell your crocheted creations using this pattern on a small scale. However, the pattern itself cannot be reproduced, sold, or redistributed in any way without the designers’ consent. For more information, please read the full copyright notice at the bottom of this page.

Sharing your makes

The best part of crochet designing for me is seeing other people using my patterns and of course, seeing their makes!

If you do decide to crochet the Tender Tomato, I would absolutely love to see your make and share it with the community. Simply share your make on Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #CillaCrochets and by tagging me @cillacrochets. You can also upload a project with a picture to Ravelry linking to this pattern, and I can view it this way (I do often take a look!).
