Tertius Mitts
Update July 20, 2019: I wrote up this pattern ages ago, and have learned a lot since then. I do intend to go through and revise it, but in the meantime I’ve added an errata page with some tips and photos for doing the pocket part of the mitten cuff. I don’t like stitching stuff up afterwards, so this is how I did it, but if you’d rather just knit the pocket flap, then the cuff, and then stitch it up, you can totally do that.
Forget flip top mitts, try flip-bottom mitts!
Gloves with a special feature - a second extra-long cuff, that can be worn down inside your sleeve to guard against that nasty cold wind that gets in between mitts and sleeve, or turned up to make a second extra-cozy mitten layer over the hand, or folded halfway between for a bit of extra warmth while leaving your fingers free (and providing a secret pocket for bus fare, keys, emergency candy stash … ).
Sizing at the moment is a ladies’ M but can easily be sized up or down by using a different needle size.
I used Zealana Kauri Fingering and it makes super-cozy, soft, thick mittens! It took just over 2 balls.
I can’t lay claim to this design, a friend had a pair like this but I had never seen anything like them before or since, and I couldn’t find a pattern. So I made one.
My first knitting pattern so feedback is appreciated! I didn’t think at the time about taking detailed step-by-step photos but if I do a second pair, the pattern will be updated.
Thanks!
