Tess: Fingerless Mitts with a Modified Gusset
These mitts have thumb-holes that are snug and sturdy, so you can keep your thumbs free without worrying about gapping, or wearing out. The thumb-holes are formed by knitting modified gussets with a cast-off edge. There’s a pretty cable design up the back of the hand, but you could just as easily leave out the chart, and knit them in a plain stockinette stitch if you’d like. And they’re versatile - you can knit a longer cuff to cover your fingers, and then fold the cuff back across the palm of your hand if you need your fingers free too. Or pull the cuff back up to keep your fingers warm.
The modified gussets require using German Short Rows, and Make One (both left and right), so this is probably not a good beginner pattern. But a fun and quick knit if you’re up for a bit of a challenge.
