Tessellated Triangles Sweater

I originally designed this sweater for a magazine issue with the theme of sweaters. When I saw the call, the first thing that popped into my head was the triangle tessellation pattern you see in the body of this sweater. Single crochet tapestry patterns and I don’t really get along very well (I get rather frustrated), but I knew working into the back loop would create a fun texture, make it easier to line my triangle pattern up, and be easier to hide my other color behind without being seen from the right side - all the things that frustrate me about tapestry, so win-win!
In my design process, I knew that I would need a different approach when I got up to the underarms because working in a continuous pattern only allows you to go so far, so I turned to my go-to half double crochet stitch pattern for a change of pace along the top and sleeves. Throughout the whole pattern, the stitch patterns are simple, and that’s exactly what I wanted so anyone could try this one.
Normally, I design my garments with negative ease because I don’t like oversized garments, and yarn usually stretches 4-6”, but with carrying my unused yarn behind and working over, this drastically limited the amount of stretch in the sweater, so this particular sweater is designed a little oversized so it will fit just perfectly, but if you don’t like the fit, it is so easy to customize, and I tell you how within the pattern.
Because of the lack of stretch, checking gauge is vital! For anyone not too familiar, I just want to explain a little, and cannot stress enough that this step is very important. This particular pattern’s gauge is taken from the triangle pattern in the body of the sweater, and is stated as “In the Round, 20 SC in the BLO = 4” (10.16 cm)”. In order to obtain this gauge without working a big chunk of the sweater up, start with a chain of at least 54, slip stitch join, and work in the sweater pattern for at least one repeat. Then measure the stitches width-wise to see how close you are to the given gauge. Take this opportunity to go up or down hook sizes as needed. Do not skip this step. This sweater is a lot of work, and I do not want it to not fit you in the end, or require a lot of frogging later.
