Tetragonos
Lately I have been drawn to slip stitch or mosaic patterns. I just love how they fuse colour and texture to create geometric ornaments of timeless beauty which look far more complex than they are. What better way to experiment and play around with them than on a small item like a sock?
This design was inspired by my spring trip to Greece where I took the photos of the garments in my Santorini Collection. Geometric patterns in a combination of white and blue are very common in Greek architecture and interior design.
Tetragonos is the Greek word for square, as in a rectangle with four equal sides, and it is also used metaphorically in the sense of “perfect”.
Yarn advice: Any 4-ply / fingering weight sock yarn will work. You need less than 100 m / 110 yds of the contrast colour.
For the mosaic pattern it is important to choose two colours of strongly contrasting brightness. Two colours with contrasting hue but similar brightness will not work as well. If you are in doubt, take a photo of the two yarns and change it to greyscale in a photo editing software. If they are clearly different shades of grey, they will work fine. If they are hard to tell apart, the pattern will be difficult to see.
Needle advice: Use the needle size that gives you the required gauge, most likely 2-3mm / US # 0-2. The pattern is not written for a specific type of needle (double pointed or circular).
Sizing: Due to the large repeat of the mosaic pattern, the socks are written for just one circumference. If you need a slightly wider or narrower sock, please consider using heavier or thinner yarn and changing the needle size.
The mosaic pattern is provided as a chart and in written form.
