Textural Tribute : A tribute to the support given by my Patrons

A textural two-color brioche hat with fun vertical stripes racing up one side, worked using some of my favorite tuck stitches including moss, honeycomb and pearl brioche!

In honor of the continued support of Knit Graffiti Patrons, here is another exclusive pattern for 2023 / 2024! Grab some DK weight yarn for a textural hat that will keep you so warm during the cold months.

Skill level:
Beginner Brioche - Intermediate. I developed this pattern specifically to learn two-color brioche, as well as several of my favorite tuck stitches, which create the most beautiful brioche textures.

Techniques used:
Twisted German Cast On, Two-Color Italian Cast On (choice of the two), knit, purl, brioche purl (brp), brioche knit (brk), sl1yo, brioche decreases, knitting in the round.

Construction Notes:
A few years ago, I fell completely in love with brioche knitting. Ever since then, I have wanted to try EVERYTHING tuck stitches! This hat is the culmination of all my obsessions, wrapped up in one gloriously quick accessory.

You will begin with a two-color brioche brim, which is a fantastic way to learn the technique if you are new to this lovely stitch. After working the brim, you will work 3 stripes / sections, alternating between 3 of my favorite tuck stitches, which use the same techniques used in traditional two-color brioche….just in different ways!! As you transition, you will keep a “racing stripe” of two-color brioche going up the beginning of the round.

Open your mind with this new pattern, as I walk you through all these fascinating techniques!

You will finish your hat with a swirly two-color brioche crown.
I wanted to design this hat with 3 sizes to fit a multitude of heads! Even heads with a lot of hair.

» Finished unstretched circumference:
17.5 (20, 23)” / 44.5 (51, 58.5) cm; meant to be worn with 1 - 2” / 2.5 - 5 cm of negative ease.

Shown in Size 2 on model with 22” / 96.5 cm head with 2” / 5 cm of negative ease.

» Gauge:
15 sts x 28 rounds = 4” / 10 cm; measured in two-color brioche rib stitch knit in the round (taken after blocking).

Main Color (MC): 97 (111, 128) yds / 89 (101, 117) m
Contrast Color (CC): 90 (103, 118) yds /
82 (94, 108) m

Light contrast sample:
MC: 1 skein of La Bien Aimée Merino DK in Vespa (light blue; 100% Superwash Merino; 252 yds / 231 m per 100 g)
CC: 1 skein of Julie Asselin Leizu DK in Biscotti (beige; 90% Merino, 10% Silk; 260 yds / 238 m per 100 g)

Dark contrast sample:
MC: 1 skein of Hedgehog Fibres Merino DK in Bramble (light speckled; 100% Superwash Merino; 219 yds / 200 m per 100 g)
CC: 1 skein of Fru Valborg Silky Yak DK in Aubergine (dark brown; 60% Merino, 20% Silk, 20% Yak; 232 yds / 212 m per 100 g)

Needles:
16 & 40” / 40.5 & 101.5 cm US 5 / 3.75 mm circular needles, or US 5 / 3.75 mm DPN’s, whichever method you prefer for knitting small circumferences in the round.

Adjust the needle size as needed to achieve the proper gauge.

Tools:
Stitch marker for noting beginning of round, row counter or your preferred method for tracking your knitting, tapestry needle for weaving in ends
